Hyderabad, Aug 7: National Handloom Day is celebrated in festive atmosphere at the Raj Bhavan, here, on Saturday.

On the occasion, Governor Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan felicitated the weavers and stated that they deserved greater support.

Speaking on the occasion, the Governor highlighted the weavers’ role during the freedom struggle and their contribution to the national movement.

“Weavers really deserve more. They should be rewarded suitably. They should also be given greater respect for all the service that they are doing to the nation,” she added.

The Governor also remembered her participation in the first ever National Handloom Day launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Tamil Nadu in 2015.

Paying rich tributes to the art of weaving, Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan stated that weavers exhibit extraordinary passion towards their profession for centuries and come out with exquisite designs with painstaking efforts and patience. They bring colour to the nation.

She called upon the people to buy local handloom products in order to support and be with the weavers and to express our respect to their profession and passion.

The Governor lauded the efforts of the Telangana Postal circle in bringing out special covers highlighting the Geographical Indications related to the handloom products of Narayanpet, Siddipet, and Warangal.

It was for the first time that Raj Bhavan organized the National Handloom Day where more than 50 weavers from across the State joined the Governors in the celebrations.

Secretary to Governor K. Surendra Mohan, Handlooms and Textiles Secretary Shailaja Ramaiyer, and other senior officials were present.

Chief Minister  K ChandrashekharRao  has conveyed his greetings to the  handloom workers, padmashali community in the state on  the occasion of National Handloom Day.  He said the exclusive handloom craft of Telangana mirrors the Indian art and culture.The CM said under the self-governance, the government is giving utmost priority to the handloom sector and developing it.  He said in tune with the changed times, the government is also extending a helping hand to the powerloom workers welfare. With the government’s visionary approach and Minister KTR able administration, the handloom sector which was collapsed under the United AP rule is being revived within the short time. The government has taken several measures to promote handloom products; the measures taken by government for the handloom sector have weaned away handloom workers from committing suicide and instil confidence among them.  Through Bathukamma sarees and other programmes the handloom weavers families are given assurance for their livelihood.  The measures also created confidence and self-respect among them.  On the National Handloom day handloom artisans are being honoured by giving away awards to them under the name of Konda LaxmanBapuji awards. He said that the government is encouraging handloom sector by organizing exhibitions and fashion shows.  He said that insurance facility for handloom workers shall be implemented on par with the RythyBandhu.  He also said that the Telangana is the only state in the country giving pensions to the handloom workers.  The CM said that the innovative schemes being implemented for handloom workers were ideal for other states. The government is successfully implementing several schemes for the handloom workers like loan waiver scheme, NethannalakuCheyutha,  Chenetha Mithra and also providing government share to the handloom societies and also providing subsidies for yarn, dyes and chemicals.   The CM expressed his happiness over the steps taken which are yielding good results. CM said that, socio-economic, political and administrative interests of padmashali community have been promoted by the state.
