Strengthen to Telangana Consumer Affairs Cell

Target to resolve Pending Cases with Time Bound

National Consumers Right is being observed on 24 December, since the Consumer Protection Act, 1986 was enacted on this day in 1986. The Day is an annual occasion for celebration and solidarity within the national consumer movement and is an opportunity to promote the basic rights of all consumers.

On Monday, in view of of National Consumers Rights Day, Telangana State Consumers Affairs Cell set target to resolve cases pending at State, District Consumer Forums with time bound.

In the last four years Telangana Consumer Forum registered 5684 cases, in which 2999 cases have been disposed and 2685 cases are pending.

District Consumer Forums in Telangana filed 94,105 cases. Till now 89,057 cases are disposed and 5048 cases are pending.

In the last year time Telangana State Consumer Redressal Cell received 46,614 calls on its helpline number. 3344 complaints were registered, where 3275 cases were disposed by Redressal cell and 69 cases are pending.

Special focus is made to resolve the pending cases with time bound and measures are taken to make more consumer friendly.

The main objective of Consumers Affairs Cell is providing better protection of consumer’s interest at free of cost. Effective safeguards are provided to the consumer, against various types of exploitations and unfair dealings, relying mainly on compensatory rather than a disciplinary or preventive approach under the Act. It applies to all goods and services unless specifically exempted, which covers private, public and cooperative sectors. It also provides speedy, inexpensive adjudication.

With the huge response from consumers, Civil Supplies Department has now focused to strengthen to Telangana Consumer Affairs Cell.

Consumer Redressal Center and Legal Metrology Department will redress the complaints by cooperating with each other.

In the last 12 month period, Legal Metrology Department conducted several raids on several Multiplexes, Shopping Malls, Seeds, Fertilizers, Pestisides companies, Petrol Pumps, Weigh Bridges, MNC Godowns, famous garments shops, Jewellery shops, Wholesale Fire crackers shops.. booked 3,059 cases and seized Rs. 25.08 crores worth goods.

Under this Redressal System, the complainant can make a complaint on white paper or in the prescribed format supplied by the Centre free of cost.   After receiving the complaint, a notice will be served to the respondent by giving a date to attend the counselling in the Centre. Counselling will be conducted every Saturday. After hearing both parties, the cases will be settled with the consent of both parties.  The unsettled cases, will be advised to the District Consumer Forum concerned for settlement through legal measures.

Commissioner for Civil Supplies Department  Akun Sabharwal said that, Telangana Consumer Affairs Cell registers all the cases for free of cost. It is every consumers right to get good quality and exact quantity of goods and services for the price they pay. If anyone feels that they are been cheated can approach Telangana Consumer Redressal Cell and register their case in writing on a white paper. No legal or other charges will be collected. With cases been resolved on time bound bases, number of complaints are increasing. All efforts are made to strengthen the Redressal Cell and resolve cases as soon as possible.
