SHE TEAM COMPLETES TWO YEARS SINCE LAUNCH

Achievements, progress and future plan of action
The SHE Teams were launched on 24th October, 2014, with the sole aim and objective of curbing eve teasing/street harassment and providing a safe and secure Hyderabad City for women.
Since the launch, the teams have worked hard to achieve this aim and will continue to strive towards making Hyderabad City a safe place for women.
CASES BOOKED SO FAR
 Till now total 800 persons were caught red handed by the teams while on patrol
 Minors-222, Majors-577
 2 PD Act cases.
 1 POCSO Act case
 40 Nirbhaya Act cases,
 33 IPC and IT Act cases in different police stations
 and 1897 petty cases were booked(Red Handed+Complaints)
 41 persons were jailed, 242 persons were fined, 392 persons were warned and let off.
 From Harassment at Public Places to cases being booked under Criminal Law amendment Act 2013 (Nirbhaya Act) and Cyber Crimes, different types of cases were booked and dealt appropriately .
RESULTS:

• Overall reduction in offences against women is around 20%

• There is a drastic reduction of harassment to women in the public places and a deterrence has been created among the boys as there is a sense of fear that the SHE Teams are watching.
• Several people have been caught red handed and jailed and cases including those under Criminal Law Amendment Act 2013 (Nirbhaya Act) have been booked.
• Offenders who harass women through phone calls, E-mails, Social Media etc are tracked down by dedicated officers using the latest technology.
FEEDBACK

In a recent survey conducted during March 2016 it is found that

• 76% of people in Hyderabad City are aware of SHE TEAMS and their work.

• 85% of people who know SHE Teams, feel safer and secured as SHE Teams is successfully operating against criminal elements in the city.

• Even in the area where there is lowest awareness, 67% of people are aware of work of SHE Teams.

• 93% of people who are aware of SHE Teams are also aware of role of SHE Teams and how to approach SHE Teams when needed.

SHE TEAMS IN INTERMEDIATE CURRICULUM
SHE Teams as a topic was introduced in the curriculum of intermediate 2nd year Civics syllabus(Telangana and State Board) in order to make students know about the concept and respect women. To come forward and give complaints in case of any problem.

 Till now total 2362 complaints were received through various means and attended to

NATURE OF OFFENCES:-
• Stalking-39%
• Phone harassment-21%
• Passing lewd comments-21%
• Harassment through social media, sending photos, videos to the mobile phones-9%
• Touching inappropriately-3%
• Taking photos without the knowledge of the victim-2%
• Creating nuisance near Bust stands, at girls colleges,Hostels etc using 2 Wheeler ,cars-5%

EXTENDED TO CYBERABAD AND WHOLE STATE OF TELANGANA
 By observing the success of SHE teams in the Hyderabad City, it was first extended to Cyberabad and then to the entire Telangana State by providing necessary training to the SHE Teams of entire state.
 Now the entire Telangana State has the SHE Teams working relentlessly for the safety of women.
SHE TEAMS IN OTHER STATES:
 On 25th July, 2016, a team of 6 Senior Police Officers from Maharashtra visited Hyderabad to know about She teams, its working and the legal process to be followed. Later it was implemented in Maharashtra in the name of Nirbhaya teams from 4th August onwards.
 Apart from Maharashtra, Odisha Women Commission also visited Hyderabad to know about SHE Teams and now the program is implemented in Odisha also.
 Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Maharashtra, Chattisgarh, Rajasthan, and have enquired and taken material to implement SHE Teams in those states.
MINOR COUNSELLING SESSIONS
 Apart from counselling by the Officers, for minors caught in eve teasing, 9 major professional counselling sessions were conducted in addition to the regular counselling sessions in the presence of their parents.Services of 6 member panel of professional psychologists were taken for this.
AWARENESS PROGRAMS :
 Apart from nabbing the accused and booking cases, to change the mindset of the people and to create awareness regarding SHE Teams more than 200 colleges, 100 schools, 300 private and working women hostels, Government schools, social welfare hostels etc were covered. All major crowded areas like bus stops, railway stations, parks, shopping malls, labour addas, slum areas, cinema theatres, RTC buses, MMTS trains, 7 seater autos etc were covered.

 Prepared posters, stickers, short films folk songs, pamphlets etc to increase awareness regarding SHE Teams

 Several events organized to create awareness regarding legal rights and self defence techniques.

 Conducted several gender sensitization workshops along with several Colleges, NGOs, Corporates, American Consulate ,British Consulate etc.

 SHE Teams stalls organized during various occasions to increase awareness.
FUTURE PLAN OF ACTION
 In the path of providing safety and security to women, to reach the people of all strata and ages, different kinds of posters, banners, pamphlets, movie slides, short films and folk songs are prepared and efforts are on to play them in the cinema theatres and televisions also to convey the safety message to the people.
 Volunteer groups to be formed in all colleges with the students and lecturers in order to act as connecting link with the SHE Teams to communicate the problems faced by the students of the college.
 Taking the help of eminent persons from all walks of life like doctors, lawyers, students, house wives, software engineers, business people etc by forming voluntary groups in order to communicate with the SHE Teams about the women harassment problems faced by them.
 Making women self confident by imparting training in self defence techniques and legal awareness programs from the child hood itself by visiting the schools and training them.
 Involving uneducated, slum and poor people also by making their representation to each slum with their elders
 Collaborating with more NGOs to help create awareness and conduct programs
 Conducting awareness programs to the RTC drivers, lady conductors, etc
 Strive to make 100% of the public of Hyderabad aware of SHE Teams.
 Volunteers from all age groups, reformed accused, NGOs, and eminent persons from all the fields including the print and electronic media are doing their possible help in taking forward the programme as a people’s movement to change the mindset of the people as a whole gradually and to provide a safe and secure environment to the people of the state to achieve the task of Golden Telangana.
PEOPLE’S RESPONSE AND PARTICIPATION
 Dial 100 and social media was effectively used by the victims to approach the SHE Teams with problems. People are directly coming to the office to give complaints without any inhibitions. Many people could get their problems solved with the help of the teams within a short time and at the same time their identity was kept secret.
 This is encouraging the women to come forward to SHE teams with their problems freely and confidently.
