Celebrations of International Biological Diversity Day –
22 May 2020
Every year May 22 is celebrated as the International Day for Biological
Diversity (IDB) to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity.
The theme for this year International Biological Diversity Day is “Our
solutions are in nature”.
To celebrated International Biological Diversity Day in this lockdown
situation Telangana State Biodiversity Board (TSBDB) has started an
online awareness campaigns for the school /college students and common
people about the biodiversity conservation & its sustainable Utilization.
As this is the 27th year of IBD Day thus board planned to organize 27 online
campaigns started from 29 April to 22 May 2020. The campaigns involves
competitions on poster, eassy, quiz, paper presentation, elocution, slogan
writing, pledge on Biodiversity, article writing on festivals related to
Biodiversity & traditional Medicinal Knowledge / Our solutions in nature,
capture the nature, song & dance on biodiversity, pledge on biodiversity,
youth talks, slogan, mobile application development on biodiversity of
Telangana, traditional /natural food cooking competition and children
biodiversity congress.
Webinars on women in Biodiversity, Science & Traditional Knowledge by
Dr. Kanna K. Sripurapu, WASSAN, Healthy food, agriculture & Biodiversity
by Dr. Dinesh Balam, Associate Director, WASSAN, Different ways of
Biodiversity Conservation byKunal Satyarthi, IFS Director Central
Academy for state Forest Service, Dehradun, People Culture & Biodiversity
by Smt. Sushma Iyengar, Founder, Mahila Vikas Sangathan and Action for
Biodiversity with special reference to ‘Our solutions are in nature’ by
Achalender Reddy, IFS Former Secretary National Biodiversity Authority
(NBA), Chennai were also organized and around 300 participants in each
sessions across the state and country joined the webinar and had a fruitful
interaction with the speakers.
Board also conducted online Biodiversity Youth Parliament to build
leadership quality in the youth on 14 may 2020. Around 100 students
across the Telangana State joined the webinar and 70 students
participated and presented their ideas about biodiversity conservation and
it sustainable utilization.
Kalicharan S. Khartade, IAS Secretary, Telangana State Biodiversity
Board presented the welcome address as appraised about the online
activities.
Achalendhar Reddy, IFS, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests,
Arunalchal Pradesh was invited as Expert Speaker on the theme of “Our
solutions are in nature”.
Smt. R. Shobha, Prl. Chief Conservator of Forest (HoFF) the Guest of
honor talks about the impertinence of Biodiversity.
A Telugu song about Biodiversity Conservation and its Utilization was also
launched for maximum awareness among common people.
Dr. Rajat Kumar, IAS Principal Secretary, I& CAD, EFST Dept., Director
General, EPTRI and Chairperson Telangana State Biodiversity Board was
the Chief Guest for the occasion and he mentioned biodiversity as the
basic source of life.
The Minister for Environment, Forests Science and Technology,
Endowments and Law Departments Allola Indrakaran Reddy has
given a recorded message on the International Day for Biological Diversity
2020 and mentioned that Biological diversity is the basis for the survival of
organisms, conserve biodiversity and people need to be partners in
biodiversity conservation and it is also responsible for every citizen to
protect biodiversity.
The Minister also said that, as the global community is called to re examine its relationship to the natural world, one thing is certain: despite all
our technological advances we are completely dependent on healthy and
vibrant ecosystems for our health, water, food, medicines, clothes, fuel,
shelter and energy, just to name a few. The slogan “Our solutions are in
nature” emphasizes hope, solidarity and the importance of working together
at all levels to build a future of life in harmony with nature.
Around 300 people from across Telangana and the country including the
Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs) members joined the
Program.
It’s the 27th year of celebrating International Day for Biological Diversity, so
we celebrated this campaign by 27 different activities. Around 6000 people
participated in all together in all the online events.
Telangana State Biodiversity Board has made this as an attempt to Asian
record book.
